Earlier this week, South China Morning Post reported that Wuhan urologist Hu Weifeng passed away on June 2nd. His death marks the fifth doctor from Wuhan Central Hospital to pass away. In early April, photos of Hu Weifeng in the hospital had previously circulated throughout Chinese and global media: his skin had turned a darker shade due to liver damage caused by the coronavirus. He was 42 years old at the time of his death, and “is survived by his wife and two sons.”
Hu Weifeng worked in the same hospital as the coronavirus whistleblower Li Wenliang, who passed away in February. Li Wenliang was a 34-year-old ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital. The Chinese government reprimanded him when he tried to speak out to his coworkers about the coronavirus dangers. The BBC reported that local authorities later apologized to Li Wenliang after accusing him of “making false comments” and having “severely disturbed the social order”; however, the anger and sadness over how the government has handled the whistleblowing action remains.
