DOJ Plans to Recognize National Whistleblower Day

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will “recognize and support” National Whistleblower Day on July 30 by pointing employees towards educational resources and programming on whistleblower rights according to a letter sent to National Whistleblower Center (NWC).

In the letter, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Michael Williams highlighted a memo sent in April outlining available whistleblower protections for employees and contractors and listed other resources made available by the agency.

These include:

  • “A video developed by the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) titled ‘Reporting Wrongdoing: Whistleblower Rights and Protections.’”
  • “A training handout developed by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC), titled ‘Know Your Rights When Reporting Wrong.’”
  • “A fact sheet developed by DOJ OIG titled ‘Whistleblower rights for Contractors.’”

Each year, NWC sends letters to federal agencies urging them to recognize National Whistleblower Day through educational programming. On April 10, NWC sent out the letters calling for the celebration of National Whistleblower Day 2024 on July 30.

For the past ten years, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed an annual resolution designating July 30 as National Whistleblower Day. The resolution encourages federal agencies to celebrate by informing employees of their whistleblower rights and “acknowledging the contributions of whistleblowers to combating waste, fraud, abuse, and violations of laws and regulations of the United States.”

In recent years, a growing number of federal agencies have recognized National Whistleblower Day. Ahead of last year’s National Whistleblower Day, some agencies confirmed with Whistleblower Network News their plans for the holiday.

This National Whistleblower Day, NWC is hosting a celebration on Capitol Hill. The event will feature speeches by whistleblowers, advocates and government officials including Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Wyden and Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger.
