Jane Turner, Whistleblower Network News columnist and host of the Whistleblower of the Week podcast, is featured in a new video profile by LinkedIn News. Turner shares her journey from FBI agent to FBI whistleblower to whistleblower advocate and explains how she has found her calling in her work with WNN.
The profile is the latest episode of Catalyst, a web series profiling individuals who have dealt with significant setbacks in their careers, and have still been able to achieve success.
For Turner, her “setback” occurred over a decade into her career at the FBI, when in her position as a senior resident agent in Minot, North Dakota, she discovered that a child sex abuse case had been covered up by the Bureau.
“The FBI stands for fidelity, bravery, and integrity,” Turner said. “I was really torn because I knew that my job was investigating crimes against children and my mind was just racing. [I thought] what should I do? Should I continue this existence in Minot and pretend like nothing happened or should I speak out?”
“All of the sudden [this very clear thought] came to me. If not me, who? If not now, when?…I realized that fidelity, bravery, and integrity were my North Star.”
And so, Turner blew the whistle. She faced swift retaliation, eventually culminating in her constructive discharge from the FBI.
“I realized I could have fidelity, bravery and integrity in other areas,” Turner stated. “And so I chose to take those representations, which I adhered to so strongly, into the whistleblowing field.
In addition to profiling and interviewing whistleblowers for WNN, Turner serves on the Board of National Whistleblower Center.
Furthermore, she is spearheading a whistleblower-led campaign calling for the permanent recognition of National Whistleblower Day. Turner and her fellow whistleblowers are urging President Biden to sign an Executive Order which designated July 30 as National Whistleblower Day.
To support the campaign, the whistleblowers have launched a GoFundMe. They also encourage whistleblower supporters to join the campaign by signing the petition and amplifying the campaign’s message on social media.
