Update: A summary of the webinar as well as video of the event are available here.
On December 14, 2020, Whistleblower Network News (WNN) will host a free webinar on how whistleblowers and journalists can use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Since FOIA was enacted in 1966, it has served as a valuable tool for journalists, activists, whistleblowers, pro se litigants, academics, and curious members of the public to learn about the inner workings of the U.S. government.
Making a FOIA request is relatively simple. This webinar will help whistleblowers learn how to navigate the FOIA process and offer important tips to increase your likelihood of getting the information you seek.
Whistleblower attorney Stephen M. Kohn of Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto will lead the webinar. Kohn has filed thousands of FOIA requests and litigated many successful FOIA appeals over the last four decades. This FOIA training is the perfect starting point for those new to FOIA. It will include a discussion of the key procedural elements of the statute and a summary of its exemptions. Kohn will review the FOIA exemptions and how other statutes might impact the processing of FOIA requests. The webinar will also cover how to get a fee waiver and expedited processing. It will also cover appeals of denials and fee waivers.
The webinar will be held via Zoom on Monday, December 14 at 11 am EST. It is open to the public, however, only 40 seats are available. Reservations are required to attend. Visit this link to reserve your seat. A recording of the webinar will be available for viewing at a later date.
