While National Whistleblower Center (NWC) is advocating for seven urgently needed whistleblowers in 2024, the whistleblower advocacy organization has taken a moment to highlight their major accomplishments in 2023. On February 9, NWC released its annual report for 2023.
“2023 was an incredible and whirlwind year for NWC,” wrote NWC Executive Director Siri Nelson. “We have achieved so much as a small, but growing team. This work can sometimes be harrowing and the road sometimes appears blocked. But, with the strong support of whistleblowers and their advocates, NWC was able to forge major inroads for whistleblower rights.”
One of the accomplishments highlighted in the report was the 10th annual National Whistleblower Day. NWC has been instrumental behind the passage of Senate National Whistleblower Day resolutions and once again hosted an event on Capitol Hill featuring whistleblowers, advocates, and government officials.
“In 2023 we celebrated 10 years of National Whistleblower Day (NWD) resolutions by the United States Senate, and this gave us an opportunity to reflect on the incredible work that NWC has achieved to change the culture around whistleblowing,” wrote Nelson. “Over a decade NWD has expanded to have a global reach and a historic number of federal agencies have accepted whistleblowing as a core component of anti-corruption efforts.”
Looking ahead, NWC’s report notes that the organization will continue to support the whistleblower-led campaign to make National Whistleblower Day permanent.
Other major accomplishments highlighted in the report include legislative developments, such as the introduction of whistleblower bills relating to the SEC, IRS, and CFPB as well as judicial action, including the submission of amicus briefs in major Supreme Court whistleblower cases.
The report also details NWC’s participation in the United Nations Conference of States Parties for the Convention Against Corruption. “At this convening NWC was recognized for our work in fighting Environmental Corruption, and engaged in outstanding efforts to highlight the incredible success of rewards programs, and the necessity for including whistleblower reward regimes in all anticorruption efforts,” Nelson wrote.
