The National Whistleblower Center issued the following action alert today which featured a 2016 speech by then FBI Director James Comey. The full action alert is reprinted below:
In light of the news of former FBI Director James Comey’s dismissal, the NWC is calling for our government to reaffirm its commitment to protecting whistleblowers from retaliation.
Former Director Comey gave a speech on the importance of whistleblowers in our society, during a 2016 National Whistleblower Day celebration. His words remind us of our duty as citizens to report illegal activities and support those who have the courage to stand up.
National Whistleblower Day commemorates America’s first whistleblower law. In a resolution passed unanimously by the Continental Congress on July 30, 1778, our Founding Fathers proclaimed that it was the “duty of all persons in the service of United States, as well as all other inhabitants thereof, to give the earliest information to Congress or any other proper authority of any misconduct, frauds or misdemeanors committed by any persons . . . which may come to their knowledge.”
Mr. Comey words acknowledge the importance of the 1778 Whistleblower Resolution, stating “Embrace a culture where people will speak up and will be heard”.
Please sign the STAND UP FOR WHISTLEBLOWERS Action Alert, we are sending to President Trump and your Members of Congress.
We must demonstrate that the American people will not tolerate retaliation against whistleblowers.
